When I think about the things I am grateful for, they of course involve my children, family and health. But right now I would like to talk to you guys, our customers… of whom I am grateful for, and do not always get the chance to personally talk to you, or thank.
There have been many changes at Bobbi’s over the years. Many of which have cost us some customers. Some changes even loyal, supportive customers don’t like. We have learned a lot over the last few years, we have made mistakes, and we have also made positive changes that have allowed us to stay in business, keep our employees happy and have hope that we will survive these corporate, challenging times.
Thank you Loyal customers, who have shown us graciousness and support as we learn and grow in this business. It is customers like you who remind us about love and community.

At what point is enough, enough!?
We, the working people of America and the small business owners, need to take a stand. As INCONVENIENT as it is to search out small businesses for what we need, we have to do it. I am just a guilty as the next person and have spent many dollars at Corporate headquarters all over the state. When you want a cup of coffee, some dog food, diapers, where do you go? It’s hard to spend a little more for something when you know, not only will you spend less, but you will get everything you need in one place. It’s the same for restaurants, it might cost a little bit more to go to a family restaurant in your community, because they don’t have the buying power that chains have, but what you are doing is allowing families in your community to thrive. When you buy a book at your local bookshop, a burrito from your local Mexican food restaurant
you are supporting the families who own the business, and more importantly, you are supporting the families that depend on that business staying open. You are putting food in the mouths of children, you are helping families stay in their homes.
Felipa just left my office in tears, thanking God that our landlord has decided to renew our lease instead of taking Starbucks offer to DOUBLE our rent to take over our location.
Starbucks, it’s probably now a word in our dictionary, in fact, just in this small town alone there are already 3-4 stand alone stores, plus the one in Target, Albertsons, etc… and up until two weeks ago, prior to our landlord being approached with this offer, we would go to Starbucks to buy our crew mochas, as a very small way to thank them for their hard work and dedication to this small business. The irony in this doesn’t baffle me, it actually angers me. I was part of what is putting small businesses out of ideal locations, and potentially out of business all together. Literally, we were supporting THE one who offered to put us out of business.
How many landlords are there like ours? One who will put integrity and loyalty before the mighty dollar. Starbucks offered him nearly DOUBLE what we pay. Who could refuse that? What small business could compete with that? Thank Goodness, our beloved Landlord, who has been our landlord since our family opened Bobbi’s in Camarillo in 1980, said no, we have been here since he started this plaza, and he intends to remain loyal to us. It will take Landlords all over this nation to do the same thing. It will take us, as consumers, to purchase what we NEED from locals.
I recently had the honor to attend an investment forum, where brilliant inventors were presenting their products to investors, with the hopes of getting funding to grow to their potential. This sounds wonderful, someone creating a product, turning it into a small business, finding someone who believes in them enough to financially support their dreams… but what was consistent in every presentation was “The Exit Strategy.” How do you plan to get your money back, in a big way, to the shareholders /investors. Exit strategy. Each and every one of these brilliant people’s plan was to get bought out by a big name, Clorox, Sony, Nabisco, Chevron…
We cannot blame the Corporations completely. If we weren’t buying from them, they wouldn’t be in business. I realize that in some areas in the United States, there literally are not small businesses anymore, so people do not have a choice. But before it is too late everywhere, we need to put a stop to this power. So we spend a little more and have a little less. We can do this. It is a big job, but each of can make a small difference and together that makes a big difference. And I know this might not be achievable all the time. But we can be aware all the time. And each time we are able to do it, we contribute toward a stronger nation, where working people are proud and feel secure.
We employ 20 local people here at Bobbi’s. Over half of whom have families they are supporting with this job. We have employees who have been with us for over 30 years. It is unearthing how a large enterprise with deep pockets can move in to a community they do not even live in and take over. Is there any regard to the impact this will have on the families depending on small business, not only to keep them employed, but to keep them employed above minimum wage.
We hand butcher our meats, and prepare all of our sauces from scratch daily. This can only be done by trained staff who CARE. Our staff cares because we are right here working with them, and we care. We laugh together, we have cried together.
I now vow to drive that extra mile to buy mochas at local, hard to find, lifeblood of our nation, small independently owned family business.
